Poopy butt in rabbits

“Poopy butt” is the scientific term for a not-uncommon problem affecting pet bunnies. Rabbits have two different kinds of feces: the hard dry pellets that they deposit into their litter box, and...

What a great bunch of kids...and watch the video

...this is one of our RabbitMatch.org volunteers.  She's just a nice as she sounds.

Please help the littler kids at ACES get their playground.  : )  video: http://www.races4aces.com

Family & Friends:

For the last little while, a few of my friends and I have been working with a sweet little bilingual charter school in South LA. It's called A.C.E.S., it's a K-5 with 130 kids (chosen by lottery), and by the time the kids finish 5th grade, they are fully bilingual. It's a pretty incredible place.

The downside of being such a tiny school is that they get almost no money from the school district. They survive on donations, and they put everything they get into the curriculum. As a result, they have no playground. Just a blacktop, a backboard and a tetherball. Don't get me wrong -- you'll never hear these kids complain. But it's pretty sad. I suppose at this point I could toss out a platitude like "All kids deserve a place to play". But I think instead I'll just stick with what I know. I know these kids. And these kids deserve a place to play.

So my friends and I got together and decided to run the Orange County Marathon to help raise the money for the playground. (We even talked the principal into running with us!) It works like this: dedicate four months to training for a 26 mile race through the OC, and with any luck, you sponsor me. For however much you can. Any amount will help.

I've been training since February. (I'm up to 19 miles this Saturday.) The race is a month away. And now is the point where you come in. I know times are tough. It's probably not the best time to be asking for help. But just know that anything you can give will make a huge difference in the lives of South LA kids for years to come.

So. You can head over to our main website http://www.races4aces.com to watch a little video that a few members of our group made with the kids' help, and to learn more about the school and our playground project. Or if you're ready to help out, you can go straight to my fundraising page, http://www.active.com/donate/Playground4ACES/rundutchessrun. Either way, thanks for reading such a long email, and for being the kind of person I feel comfortable sending something like this to.

Thanks!
Danielle

**SMALL PRINT:  We've teamed up with ActiveGiving.com to do the accounting, so all donations are completely secure and tax deductible. With your donation, you'll receive an electronic receipt and a tax code.

The Great Office War -- You MUST Watch This Video!!!

Who can resist this face...?

Skaya is one of our bunderful adoptables at RabbitMatch.org.  She's been waiting for a home for over a year.

Here's just part of her story...

...Hello all!!!    It is Feb. '10 and YES, I'm still very much available!!!  I had the mom take some fresh glamour shots of "mois".  We were aiming to demonstrate my sleek, matte, lean and large physique.  I mean it is scandalous that a beauty such as myself  is still a wallflower!!!  I have everything going for me!!  Looks!!  Personality!!!  And I'd fit nicely into your  family.  The younger set wouldn't even THINK of trying to pick me up.  I weighed 8 lbs 10 oz today. I truly am a Giant, on the smaller side, of course.  Lovingly yours, Skaya

11/1/09 update for Plisetskaya.  Hello All, I weighed in at 8 lbs 8 oz.  I'm a sleek, beautiful girl, no dewlap to speak of!!!  I have privileges!!!  Mom doesn't bother with the run for me.  No sir!!!  I do laps around the room  free style!!!  Of course when I run past the mom cleaning up the room for the day, I pause to give her ankles a few bunny kisses.  I'm that kind of rabbit.   Love Skaya

Hullo, it's me, Skaya with my 9/9/09 update.  Weight = 8 lbs even!!!  You should see me race back and forth in the 35 ft rabbit run when mom calls my name!!  I'm smart as well as pretty!!!  Lovingly yours, Skaya.

Hi!!  Skaya here w my August update.  I weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz.!!  heading toward giant status, I think!!!  My stepsister, Ursula, was adopted, but, yes!!  I'm still very much here.  I'm still a growing girl and an armful at that!!! Whether your lap is large or small, it will be perfect for me!!!  I've been wowing them at offsite adoptions but I'm waiting especially for you!!  Pirouettes across the room, your Skaya.

Plie, plie, pas de bourre........****hoppity** thump****...oh, mom says it's break time, so I'll take this opportunity to pass on my May update.  First of all, let's change that birthdate to 10/1/08.  I just had my first MAJOR shed and it was a dooozie.  Almost kind of reptilian (shudder).  ANYWAY, I now have a sparkling glossy jet black coat with the most delicate sprinkling of a few white hairs.  Most fetching.  Imagine a few snowflakes on the windswept obsidian lava flows at Mt. Lassen......got that picture???  I'll just practice my dance routines until you get here, OK??  With a pirouette or two, just for you, Plisetskaya aka Skaya.

Oh, and I weighed in this month at 6 lbs 14 oz.  Just perfect.  : )

Hello Los Angeles!!  Well, what a surprise!!  First I find myself saved from abandonment by the RabbitMatch moms and then I'm thinking I must be looking in a mirror....There is Ursula and we look exactly alike!! My name is Plisetskaya, you can call me Skaya for short but I chose my formal name to remind you of my incredible beauty and grace. I'm another gorgeous black, silky girl.   I weighed in at 5 lbs 3 oz on 2/1/09.  My birthdate is 3/1/08.

Veganzilla...one Very Smart 'Zilla!!

I know, I know, You think we NEED meat protein. That is what I used to believe, too. The truth is we don’t. Now, I don’t want to get all preachy and stuff. So, I will avoid coming off as sanctimonious if I can.  There are just simply too many reasons to adopt a vegan diet!

9373f54c2497317eac3ed76aa3aba756?s=128&d=&r=G

Trust me. I understand all about the manly need to chase something down and kill it and then eat parts of it and wear other parts and show off other parts as decorations in the home. It harbors back to the primitive wild instinct of the hunter gatherer thing. It’s all cool.  There seems to be some sort of right of passage when a guy kills their first animal. I don’t know what it is necessarily, but I can relate to it. I just don’t see it as necessary anymore. Not in today’s world.

A new classic...Twas the night before Easter...

Twas the night before Easter, and all through the house, all the bunny's were chewing on a nice piece of couch
The carrots were hung near their beds with great care, in hopes they approve and don't nom on my hair
The wires all up and out of the way, no tv or computer, no phone or a fray
The water dish full and the plate of veggies out, for the Great Rabbit to have after he hops all about
The evening was warm and quiet, the stars danced in the sky, a twinkle of kale in each rabbit's eye
In hops the Great Rabbit, without making a sound, with the Easter pizza he hops all around
He has some water, it's been a long night, and chomps on some veggies, no need for a light
He spots some chairs, some carpet, and ponders a bit, *I better not eat that it might make me sick*
Out with a leap and into the air, on his way to other bunnies, some lops and a hare.

Secrets of the Silk Road - Bowers Museum

Went to see this Wednesday. Truly breathtaking. 1800 BCE - 1000 CE. The fabric, the mummies, the grave goods. They even had dessicated wonton and cookies (!!) from 1000 years ago. It was actually a high point for me...i've been reading on this area for years. So Go!!

Paralyzed Rabbit Eases Therapy for Hospitalized Children

Kudos, nosebonks and binkies all around!!

Easter is a bad time for bunnies...So we Really Want to Thank Los Angeles Animal Services and Interim General Manager, Kathy Davis, for implementing a rabbit adoption moratorium during pre-Easter week in all our city shelters.  This delays impulse 'buying' a live animal as a gift.  Never a good idea.  All those wonderful adopters out there can still choose their animal companion, take care of the necessary paperwork and then pick up their new fuzzkid Tuesday, April 6th.

Thank you LAAS!

You rock for the bunnies!

Caffe Boa planning rabbit-based Easter menu

Caffe Boa, long noted for its creative use of local, organic and fresh ingredients, will celebrate Easter with a special brunch, as well as a six-course, prix-fixe, rabbit-based dinner.

The Easter Bunny better steer clear.

Both locations - the original in Tempe, and the Caffe Boa Bistro in Mesa - will offer an a la carte brunch of rabbit loin "Canadian bacon" eggs Benedict, brioche French toast and garlic scrambled eggs with salmon and warm cream cheese, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The brunch is a la carte (with dishes ranging from about $9 to $12). Bottomless mimosas are an additional $19.95.

Caffe Boa executive chef Payton Curry, inspired by the tales of Alice in Wonderland, is preparing a six-course dinner based primarily on rabbit, which is appearing on the menus of more and more restaurants. Dinner is available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and costs $65.

The dinners will consist of:

• Carrot soup with carrot soup with crispy rabbit confit.

• Rabbit-liver mousse crostini, fines herbes salad, quince mostarda, horseradish crème fraiche.

• Rabbit terrine with black truffle, celery root and parsnip slaw, black pepper buttermilk vinaigrette, brioche.

• Ravioli of rabbit, local beet pasta, arugula-walnut pesto, local radish slaw.

• Prosciutto-wrapped rabbit leg, white truffle omelet, braised black eyed peas.

• And, for dessert, carrot cake.

There is an alternative menu available for children. Reservations are required.

For a full list of Easter dining options, go to dining.azcentral.com.

Orleans captures a Mia!!! and goes home too!!

Our Orleans charmed Mia today.  She fell in love and adopted the little fuzzrocket.  ; )  He'll be going home after easter sunday (always a good impulse shopper sniffer outer). Good life, little bunny!

Here's Orleans story...who wouldn't fall for him...  ; )

Hi there!!!  It's me, Orleans, and I'm so excited about my first time at offsite adoptions  (2/12/10) I had to tell you all about it!!!  So I have a reputation with the RabbitMatch moms, you know??  I'm known as a little ruffian, just bursting with energy and passion for  the active  lifestyle.   My condo has that tornado survivor decor, you know???    The moms were afraid I'd get booted out of Centinela Feed in the first 5 minutes!!  But No Way!!!  I was in my element!!!   All my raisins were in the litterbox even though I was surrounded by new rabbits!!!    I ignored the phermones.   I was admired, petted, had laptime and demonstrated how a few rabbits love to have a chinrub!!  That's me!!!  Playdates??   Well......not this time.....

I persuaded the mom I needed a re-do of my mugshots.  At the same time we realized that I'm going into a massive shed!!  So I borrowed the mom's hat to cover the shaggy back.  The hedgehog came along  to do some camouflage.  What do you think???  The mom suspects I'm going into a growth spurt too.  I'm a dashingly handsome red dutchboy (tiny-x here please!!!) .  Your Bunny Olympics wannabe, Orleans

It's Orleans, checking in for Feb.'10. I weighed 5 lbs. 9 oz today, 2/1/10 but probably need to fill in my frame a little  more. I'm the most handsome, muscular, 90% dutch boy ever!!!!  I love to race madly around the rabbit run, tail held high in the air.  I make people laugh!!!!  Then I get a short head start and LEAP over the edge of the x-pen.  I'm probably a candidate for rabbit agility contests but the mom does not approve.  Something about a rabbit's delicate skeleton.  But I'm young and have no fear!!!  We need more visitors at RabbitMatch. I'm sending a special bunny mental vibration to you!!!!  Bunnykisses from Orleans.

Hi!!!  It is 12-20-09 and  I need to introduce myself.   I'm  Orleans,  the new boy at RabbitMatch.  I was a baby when I was sold at the Pet Store.    You knew that most of the animals those places peddle are sick or will become sick shortly, didn't you???   I already had  a few  earmites when I was bouncing around in their window.  Well, the people who bought me weren't interested in taking a $5 rabbit with ear issues  to the vet so I've suffered until now that I found my way to RabbitMatch.     I was instantly dosed w the good stuff that wipes out any and all icky skin parasites.

My birthdate is 1/1/09.  I weigh 5.5 lbs, a lean and muscular dutch-x boy.  I have a handsome cinnamon coat and the white blaze and collar.   Contrasts nicely with my deep brown eyes!!!!   I'm a very friendly, active, personable kind of bun.  I can't wait to make friends with a loving human!!!!  I'll bet you're in that category!!!  email the mom NOW!!!!! pls.????  Entreatingly yours, Orleans.

Long Beach City College Rabbit Rescue

Bunny Bunch is at it again. For years we have wanted to help the hundreds of rabbits that have been dumped at the Long Beach City College. One thing or another always stood in the way, but this winter we were able to come up with a plan.

Because we are already overloaded with rabbits at the Burrow and in foster care we are not able to take on another few hundred. We rescue our rabbits from the high kill shelters and don't want to stop doing that, so we thought it would be best to spay and neuter all of the rabbits at the college and then release them back to living on the grounds at the college; at least that way the breeding would end.

Of course we do not suggest that rabbits live outside but thought this plan was better than none.

Over the last couple of months rabbits have been taken to our vets for spaying and neutering. This last week, rabbits were set up in a building on the campus so we could do health checks and get them ready for Western University’s visit to spay and neuter one hundred rabbits.

We are looking for more vets to work with us on low cost spay and neuter so we can finish all the rest of the rabbits, which we are guessing to be about two hundred.

People think that releasing their unwanted rabbit into a nice green field, golf course, park, or college is a nice way for a rabbit to live. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are domestic rabbits, not wild rabbits. It is illegal to abandon a rabbit at the college, or anywhere else for that matter. There is a $500 fine for anyone caught doing so.

Many of the rabbits are killed by predators, run over, or even poisoned. When a domestic rabbit is put into a group of rabbits living outside they will not accept him and will fight for territory which results in bite wounds, torn ears, and other injuries. There is often disease running within groups of rabbits living outside. We have found that at least thirty percent of the rabbits show signs of syphilis. Many have fleas and mites too.

We are treating the sick rabbits for all of the above. When we have caught all of the rabbits, they will be spayed or neutered and healthy before they are released.

We are also looking for people to adopt these rabbits. If you are interested please go to our website and fill out an adoption questionnaire, or email caroline@bunnybunch.org. Ideally we would like to get them all into homes if possible. We will have some of these rabbits for adoption at the Orange County Pet Expo in April, plus will be holding adoption events in Long Beach after Easter.

Thank you to Long Beach City college for providing funding for spaying and neutering, and allowing us to come up with a plan to take care of all the rabbits. Also, for letting us use a building to house the rabbits during this program. Thank you to Best Friends for providing temporary crates for the rabbits and sending supplies. Thank you to Western University for offering low cost spay/neuter for eighty rabbits and caring for them after the surgery and to the staff who donated their time. Thank you to the local rabbit vets for proving low cost spay and neuter. And a big thank you to Donna and Jackie who work at LBCC for being there for the rabbits over the years and through this rescue.

We have set up a fund to help with medical costs for the sick and injured rabbits. Donations can be sent to The Bunny Bunch LBBC Rescue, P.O. Box 2583, Chino, CA 91708.
